Ökklatognun gerist þegar ökklinn snýst, beygist eða lendir í óþægilegri stöðu. Þá teygjast eða rifna liðböndin sem halda ökklabeinunum stöðugum.
Liðböndin eru mikilvæg því þau halda liðnum á sínum stað og koma í veg fyrir að hann hreyfist of mikið. Algengast er að tognun verði á ytri hlið ökkla.
Alvarleiki tognunar getur verið mismunandi. Stundum nægir að hvíla, en ef verkir eru miklir eða erfitt er að stíga í fótinn er gott að fá mat frá lækni eða sjúkraþjálfara.
Tognun verður þegar ökklinn fer út fyrir sitt eðlilega hreyfisvið og liðböndin teygjast of mikið eða rifna. Algengustu aðstæður eru:

Ef verkurinn er mjög mikill, mikil bólga eða þú getur ekki stigið í fótinn þá er mikilvægt að leita til læknis.
Markmiðið er að minnka verki og bólgu, koma aftur á eðlilegri hreyfingu og styrk og fyrirbyggja endurtekna tognun.
Mikilvægt er að flýta sér ekki of mikið. Byrja rólega aftur í íþróttum þegar verkur er ekki til staðar.
