Sever’s er ein algengasta ástæða hælverkja hjá börnum og unglingum sem eru að vaxa. Hann tengist vaxtarkjarna (apophysis) hælsins, nánar tiltekið þar sem hásinin (Achilles sinin) festist við hælbeinið (calcaneus). Vaxtarkjarnar eru svæði úr brjóski sem síðar styrkjast og breytast í bein en þeir eru viðkvæmari fyrir álagi meðan þeir eru að þroskast.
Einkenni koma yfirleitt fram hjá börnum á aldrinum 7–15 ára, sérstaklega á vaxtarkippum. Á þessum tímabilum vaxa beinin hraðar en vöðvar og sinar. Þetta veldur spennu í fótleggjum og fótum sem getur sett aukið álag á hælinn og valdið vaxtarverkjum.
Hjá virkum krökkum er hællinn undir miklu álagi t.d. við hlaup og hopp. Þá getur vaxtarkjarninn orðið viðkvæmur og birtist sem verkur eða þreifieymsli í hælnum sem versnar við áreynslu.
Einkenni Sever’s koma oftast fram sem verkur í hæl. Einkennin geta varað í nokkrar vikur eða mánuði, en ganga yfirleitt til baka með réttri meðferð. Helstu einkenni eru:

Markmiðið með meðferð er að draga úr verkjum, styrkja nærliggandi vöðva og gera krakkanum kleift að snúa aftur í íþróttir og hreyfingu. Flestar meðferðir fela í sér sjúkraþjálfun og álagsstýringu. En einnig er hægt að nota stuðningstæki líkt og gelhæla og innlegg (orthotics).
